What is hyperpigmentation? Hyperpigmentation is darkening of the skin due to an increased production of melanin. The result is dark brown spots on the surface of the skin and can be many different sizes.
Who can be affected by this? Both men and woman, young and old, can be affected by this condition of all ethnic groups.
How do you get it? The primary reason we see hyperpigmentation is from too much sun exposure. You may see this occur on the face, chest, arms, and hands. Hormonal changes (melasma) can cause the skin to pigment. Another common cause of pigmentation is injury- this can be caused by picking at your skin.
How can I treat it? Peels and microdermabrasion are great ways your esthetician can help you in the treatment room. Skincare with lightening properties can lighten the areas of concern. Sunscreen is a must!
