Ask Your Esthetician: Do I Have Rosacea?

This is a common spa question. First of all let me be clear that your esthetician does not diagnose rosacea. Rosacea needs to be diagnosed by a doctor. Since rosacea is most common in middle aged women, estheticians do see many cases of rosacea in our clients. Facials and proper skin care can help with this inflammatory skin condition. Below are two types of rosacea most commonly seen in the spa as stated by the American Academy of Dermatology

Subtype 1: Facial redness, flushing, visible blood vessels

Signs and symptoms

  • Flushing and redness in the center of the face

  • Visible broken blood vessels (spider veins)

  • Swollen skin

  • Skin may be very sensitive

  • Skin may sting and burn

  • Dry skin, roughness or scaling

  • Have a tendency to flush or blush more easily than other people

Subtype 2: Acne-like breakouts

Signs and symptoms

  • Acne-like breakouts, usually where the skin is very red

  • Acne-like breakouts tend to come and go

  • Oily skin

  • Skin may be very sensitive

  • Skin may burn and sting

  • Visible broken blood vessels (spider veins)

  • Raised patches of skin called plaques

Using skincare specific for your sensitive skin can make a big difference in managing your rosacea successfully. Avoiding triggers such as sun exposure, stress, wind, heat, alcohol, spicy foods and exercise is important. Each individual has different triggers.

The healthier your skin is the less reactive it will be. Taking good care of your skin with soothing and hydrating products is important. Avoid fragrance and drying alcohols. SPF is a must. Using the proper moisturizer will help maintain a healthy moisture barrier resulting in less reactive skin. I have worked with many clients over the years and progress can be made to create clearer and calmer skin. Schedule a skincare coaching consultation to learn more.
